The July Student of the Month is Barbara Beaven from Chemist Outlet, Bundaberg. Barbara has been nominated by her Guild Trainer/Assessor, Linden Pirrone who had this to say….
At 58 years young and on her second time round working in pharmacy she is still finding pharmacy as rewarding as it was 40 years ago. Barbara has always inspired me by showcasing her constant enthusiasm but also her versatility. She often comments on how things were very different when she first started in pharmacy and that she could almost write a book on all of the stories she has accumulated over the years.
One of Barbara’s many career highlights was winning Pharmacy Girl of the Year for Central Queensland in 1980. As the Pharmacy Assistant of the year (PATY) award for 2016 is about to commence the state finalist workshops days, Barbara often wonders how different the workshops, awards and outfits the finalist wore back in the 80’s were compared to now.
Barbara has just completed her Certificate 3 while at Chemist Outlet in Bundaberg and has loved every minute of it. ‘Doing Certificate 3 was rewarding and I welcomed the challenge to learn more about pharmacy operations. Right now I’m juggling my studies and studies with my commitments as a full time carer for my husband.’
One of the most special things I learnt about Barbara was her passion for hitting the open road on her motorcycle to raise money for charity. It’s something her and her husband are so proud of and enjoyed so much together. Barbara still rides, but mostly just locally now. She also enjoys spending time with the ladies at Bundaberg Mature Women Group, who range in age from around 50 to 94. The group meets once a week for a cuppa and chat amongst friends, offering support and advice.
As the July Student of the month, Barbara will receive a student of the month certificate and go into the draw to win the 2016 Student of the Year. The Student of the Year will win a Full Pharmacy Assistant National Conference Registration for 2017. Please read the Terms and Conditions here.
