Purple Day is a grassroots effort dedicated to increasing awareness about epilepsy worldwide. On March 26, people from around the globe are asked to wear purple and spread the word about epilepsy.
During their lifetime, 10% of the population will have a seizure, while 3-4% will be diagnosed with epilepsy. In Australia, approximately a quarter of a million people will be diagnosed with epilepsy each year and require medication to help control their seizures.
Community pharmacy plays an important role in the management of their customer’s epilepsy; through the supply of antiepileptic medication and advice on side effects, complementary medication and dosage.
Epilepsy Queensland is inviting pharmacies to participate in an awareness campaign to be held throughout March as part of the National Epilepsy Awareness Campaign, concluding with Purple Day for Epilepsy, 26 March.
Pharmacies are invited to decorate their store purple and encourage staff and customers to dress in purple to show the community they support people living with epilepsy.
Participating stores can submit a photo of their “purple staff or store” to mailto:[email protected] by 31 March 2017 for judging of the Purple Pharmacy of the Year Award. The winning photograph will be published across social media, newsletters and websites.
Pharmacies are also encouraged to involve their local community and consider assisting Epilepsy Queensland further by raising funds through this project in the way of:
- Selling Purple Day merchandise
- Holding a purple themed event or store promotion
- Giving a tax deductable donation
