Maximising hiring

When a vacancy exists in an organisation, or if there is a need for an additional resource – there should be no more important activity than devoting enough time to the process of deciding on the newest member of your team.

When a vacancy exists in an organisation, or if there is a need to hire an additional resource, there should be no more important activity than devoting enough time to the process of deciding on the newest member of your team.

Ensuring that the next person hired in a community pharmacy is a real asset to the team is a topic that will be examined at the Pharmacy Assistant National Conference in October.

Adrian Searle, principal of Decision Health, will discuss the importance of investing the necessary time between and during recruitment projects to ensure the hiring process results in the addition of a great performer to your team.

“Staff are your most important asset, but when recruiting new staff members most Hiring Managers fall into three traps,” he said.

“The first is that they do not devote enough time to the recruitment project they are conducting.  This leads to the second trap – which is that they are unable to focus at the crucial evaluation and decision making stages and they have too many additional competing distractions.

“The third trap is that not enough time is put into the whole planning process of each recruitment project, such as deciding who will be involved in evaluating candidates, how many candidates will be evaluated at each stage, what level of evaluation will be undertaken and so on.”

Mr Searle’s presentation will include examination of “Interview Structure and Focus’, ‘Candidate Profiling’ (personality, values and cognition) and ‘Candidate Evaluation via Assessment Centres’ utilising simulation tasks.

Mr Searle has 25 years of experience in the pharmacy industry and is a management consultant, coach, adviser, speaker and strategy and learning workshop facilitator.

For 17 years the PA Conference has been the peak educational and networking event for pharmacy assistants. Held annually on the Gold Coast each October, the conference attracts up to 400 attendees.

The event includes a pre-conference workshop, comprehensive two-day education program, a social agenda including the themed conference dinner, and a trade exhibition featuring 40-plus stands showcasing the latest products, services and industry developments.

For pharmacy assistants, the conference provides a forum to gain product knowledge, personal and professional development and management skills, and to learn from the sharing of knowledge and experiences of other pharmacy assistants.

For employers, the conference provides an opportunity to provide product knowledge training and professional development for staff. Attendance is a great reward for high-achieving staff.

The conference this year is being held at QT Gold Coast at Surfers Paradise from 26 – 28 October 2017.
